This session was designed to provide training on advanced billing, reimbursement, and entrepreneurial practice management strategies in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, serving as a continuation of Part I presented at the 2026 SCSHA Annual Conference. Specifically discussed will be application of complex third-party payor systems across medical and educational environments; comprehensive review of payer contracting and credentialing processes, including in-depth guidance on credentialing with South Carolina’s Healthy Connections Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (MCOs); critical analysis of reimbursement methodologies and fee schedule structures; regulatory compliance and documentation frameworks to substantiate medical necessity and mitigate denials; revenue cycle optimization and audit readiness; and strategic implementation planning for clinicians seeking to enhance financial sustainability, diversify service delivery models, or establish and successfully operate an independent private practice.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

1.     Analyze and apply third-party payor requirements, including South Carolina Healthy Connections MCO credentialing processes, to successfully initiate and maintain payer enrollment.

2.     Develop and implement compliant documentation and reimbursement strategies that substantiate medical necessity, reduce claim denials, and optimize financial sustainability within clinical practice settings.

Lori-Ann Ferraro, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Over the Rainbow Speech-Language Pathology and Related Services, LLC          

Dr. Lori-Ann Ferraro began her career as a speech-language pathologist (SLP) in the public school setting as the Local Assistive Technology Specialist (LATS). She transitioned her career to a large academic medical center’s outpatient rehabilitation center, where she provided clinical services, coordinated the outpatient speech-language pathology program, and supervised numerous graduate students. Her experience as a clinical instructor sparked her passion for clinical education.

To lay the foundation and perpare for the 3-hour Workshop on March 5, you will receive access to a 1-hour asychronous virtual session. 

This session is designed to provide training on a foundational overview of billing practices in speech-language pathology across a variety of settings and help you get ready for deeper learning during the live workshop. The course is designed to help clinicians build confidence in navigating basic billing procedures while maintaining compliance with payer guidelines and professional standards.. Specifically discussed was  key terminology in billing such as, common billing codes, documentation requirements, and ethical considerations. 

 

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:  

  1. Describe basic documentation practices required to support accurate and ethical billing. 
  2. Apply foundational billing knowledge to sample clinical scenarios to determine appropriate coding and billing procedures.
